Preparing For Samhain #174 - 7th October 2025
What ideas do you have for Samhain this year?
I love this Sabbat, not only is it the Pagan New Year for me, but it is autumn and also a time to really hunker down and make deep connections with ancestors again.
I was running a Heal The Witch Wound course on Sunday and as part of that, we did an Ancestral meditation, it reminded me that I have slipped away, through all the hustle and bustle of life, from connecting with my ancestors as much this year, so that will be a job I’m starting later today and continuing right through and past Samhain.
I always have a ritual in my garden and invite others to come and enjoy the festivities with me. We make crafts associated with the festival, eat suitable food and drink mead, but most of all we sing, drum and have a great time. I love the crisp, dusky weather of October, it’s is cold, but not too cold, the days are darker, but not too dark, everything is heading towards ‘The Hermit’, curtains closed, lamps on and cosy fluffy socks on your feet. (Or is that just me!)
We will be eating the inevitable pumpkin soup with crusty bread and apple crumble during the ritual and on the evening we will feast around the dining table, setting an extra place for any ancestors who want to pop by. Photos will be out on the altar with mini pumpkins, acorns, conkers and pine cones and the obligatory orange and black candles.
Craft wise I am running a Morrigan Goddess doll event on Sunday, so that people have something to add to their altars, or hang in a tree outside to encourage their ancestors in. Then I love planting up seeds and popping the little pots in the poly tunnel during the cold months. Making a scrying mirror out of an old picture frame with black acrylic paint and autumnal items foraged from the local woods, making a little flower vase, covered with conkers, easy to make, all you need is a container, lots of conkers and a hot glue gun, but it looks really effective. Or why not try making a painted skull from quick air drying clay and acrylic paints so that you can incorporate “The Day of the Dead” festivities into your Samhain ritual too. I will also be writing a letter on parchment to family members who have passed and then burning the following morning when the sunrises.
